Brig. Ranjit Borthakur, hailing from the small town of Mariani in Jorhat district, joined Sainik School Goalpara in 1966. Subsequently he joined the National Defence Academy, Pune, and was commissioned to the Garhwal Rifles from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, in 1977. He retired from the Army in 2012.
He saw active service in all sectors including Nagaland, Manipur, and Jammu & Kashmir. For his distinguished service, he was awarded the Sena Medal, the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card, and the Army Commander Commendation Card.
Post-retirement, he was appointed as a Member of the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) in 2012. He retired from the APSC as Chairman in Charge in 2017. Subsequently, he served as adviser to a corporate hospital based in Guwahati. Presently, he is the Security Adviser to the North East Development Financial Institute at Guwahati.
